Editing AVI files is easily done through VirtualDub but for .wmv and .mpg files the tools are less easily available. Two very good command line tools are available for editing these files viz.

AsfBin - Very well done editor for Windows media files
MpgTx - A tool being developed largely for POSIX apps.
Both these applications are freely available for download for non-commercial use. [Please bear in mind that you should get a license for AsfBin if you choose to use this for commercial use]

Movica is a graphical user interface that uses these fine programs to edit movie files. A great deal of emphasis has been placed on keyboard shortcuts to make the job of editing easier.

Briefly what you can do is -

- Select or delete multiple portions from a video file.
- Copy, paste and fine tune the selections.
- Join multiple files together
- Split movies into smaller files
- Save and play selected scene without editing the movies

Another cross-platform program is Avidemux: http://fixounet.free.fr/avidemux/

It's more suited to transcoding downloaded video but if you're wanting to edit some video on your machine, much as you would with Virtualdub, and you're on an OS X or Linux machine, it's hard to beat. I tend to export clips from Kino that I want to clean up, do the grunt work in Avidemux, then re-import the clip into Kino.

One caveat: On the MacOS platform, you need X11.

Another linux editor is Avidemux (http://fixounet.free.fr/avidemux/). It is reffered to as the closest thing to VirtualDubMod there is for linux.

The browsers don't keep you from looking at anything... The site does.
