Which freeware video editing software is best

Hi there,
my mum asked me to transfer my sisters wedding video to DVD from VHS.
I don't have a lot of money and would like to know Which freeware video editing software is best.
And where can I get it. Also I'm not sure what hardware would be needed to do the job, I have a computer with a TV tuner card in it which I believe will capture an external video source, and obviously a VCR, but how do I connect them together, what wires do I need and is there anything else I need to know !
I'm a bit of a light weight on all of this.

Best regards Richard Milner.

O.K.

First i would like to direct you thorwards our free video editing software list. ;-) Which is here:

Then i have to ask you. Do you want just to copy the content of VHS to DVD _or_ transver video from VHS to your PC, then edit it and after that burn it? And are you using Windows?

If your TV Tuner (card) supports capturing (i guess it does ;-) ) all you need is a Coax cable from your VCR to your TV Tuner. Guess you can use the same one as you do to connect your VCR to your TV (television). Tell me if it doesn't fit ;-) I think it should!!

I have to go now - am out of time, but will write more later today or tomorrow.

just a quick addon:
You have also to get a audio cable to connect your audio output from your VCR to your PC by sound card input line ;-)

Hi,
I would like to put the VHS onto the computer's hard drive first, and then try to do things like, clean it up, edit it, and just generally make it more watchable.
(Which can't be hard !) Before putting it on to a DVD.
Yes I am using Windows XP service Pack 2.
The TV tuner (card) I am using is called: AVerTV DVB-T
what is a Coax cable ?
Please check out the 4 attachment photos, which will show you what connections I've got on my TV card. There are two connections one is the antenna the other says:
S-video video-In. I've done a photo and picture just in case the photo is not clear enough. Both connections are about the same size.
Where is my PC sound card input line at the back my computer ? Also what does the audio cable look like as I will have to buy one.
Thanks for your help
Best regards Richard Milner.

hmm.. where are your pictures? I can't see them.

Forget coax cable if you have S-Video connection. S-Video = better picture quality and no sound. Go to the store and buy a S-Video cable. You are going to need it to connect yout VCR and your TV Card for video transfer.

You also need to buy a cable for audio transfer. It's connections depend upon how your VCR can output sound - on what type of connection it is. - On the other side of audio cable you are probably going to need a male plug like your headphones have. It should go into your PC soundcard "line-in" connection.

Or you just use one coax cable and plug it from your VCR to your tv card.
Picture of coax cable:

After you do that all you need is software to import/record video and sound. Cant tell you wish is best for windows as i do not use windows. Try them all ;-)
